The School for the Feeble Minded
The school was originally named The School for Idiots and Imbeciles and was located in Faribault, Minnesota. The original purpose of the school was to provide custodial care, training and to protect the residents from exploitation. It contained roughly 2,000 residents who were trained to become productive members of society. This type of school was common throughout the United States at the time.
Sterilizations across the country was used both to lower the number of pregnancies, as well as to reduce overcrowding in hospitals. In 1925 Dight pushed through the Minnesota Involuntary Sterilization Law. Sterilizations began at the School for the Feeble Minded on January 8, 1926.
